Inline with McDonald’s international strategy, McDonald’s KSA celebrates the World Children’s Day on 20th of November of every year, with innovative initiatives designed to help needy children in the community. Funds are raised from the sales of the Happy Meal or special items produced to commemorate the occasion.

McDonald’s and the World Children’s Day (WCD)
As per McDonald’s International policy in supporting and helping the children of the world, McDonald’s announced along with UNICEF on June 16th 2002 about their cooperation to raise special funds for the benefit of the children throughout more than 30,000 McDonald’s restaurants in 100 countries around the world. Set date for celebrating the World Children’s Day to be on 20th November, coinciding with the first World Children Right Conference in 1989. McDonald’s owners in Saudi Arabia welcomed this humane decision as it falls within their community role in the kingdom and the return of benefit will be to the needy children. And this was the start of celebrating the WCD in Saudi Arabia.

In 2002 McDonald’s Saudi Arabia organized the first marathon for handicapped children for the age of 10 and above from the Disabled Children Association (DCA). The objective was to explore the skills of these kids, and give them a chance to prove their determination as an active part of the community. On the other hand, McDonald’s Saudi Arabia donated half a million Saudi Riyals to the DCA, and conducted a kingdom-wide massive advertising and public relations campaign.

In 2003, McDonald’s Saudi Arabia again celebrated the WCD by supporting King Fahed National Center for Children Cancer. The center was established back in 1990 as one of a kind in the Middle East .For this McDonald’s launched a fundraising campaign under the slogan: “help us to give them hope” aimed to raise funds by selling symbolic badges for 5 Saudi Riyals in all McDonald’s restaurants in the kingdom. The campaign achieved maximum exposure, customer interaction and delivered the story of the center.

In 2004 celebration added a big smile on the faces of orphans - children. Starting 5 weeks ahead of Nov. 20th and during the holy month of Ramadan, McDonald’s launched a kingdom-wide fundraising campaign to support both Um Al Qoura charity association in Makkah and Insan Association for Orphans in Riyadh. The campaign achieved both its financial and awareness goals, supporting both associations by SR 300,000 and publicizing their activities. Ending ceremony held in both Makkah and Riyadh attended by key figures from the society and local press.

Visits to Children at hospitals
In an attempt to draw a smile on the face of ill children, McDonald’s well skilled and trained crew visit on a regular bases different hospitals across the kingdom. Visits are well planned and executed by equipped crew, experienced in children psychology and entertainment to create a joyful atmosphere. And for every visit McDonald’s allocate gifts and prizes distributed to the children. Eventually, this community role became during the last ten years a priority for the brand in the kingdom, covering as many hospitals as possible, to mention from: Military Forces hospital in Riyadh and Kharj, King Fahed Medical City in Riyadh, King Faisal Specialty Hospital, Dallah Hospital, Saudi German Hospital and King Fahed Hospital in Dammam. In addition to the visits, McDonald’s sponsors conferences and seminars that take place in the hospital with educational, awareness and orientation agenda.
